In soccer, basketball and volleyball, the Mackinac Island Lakers take part in the Northern Lights League (NLL).
League matches are often scheduled so games are played at between 5:00 and 6:00 on Friday night and again at 8:30 on Saturday morning. The visiting athletes typically will stay in the hosting team's school overnight. Other member schools are Beaver Island, Grand Marais, Maplewood Baptist, Ojibwe, Hannahville, Munising Baptist, and Paradise.
The teams travel to and from the island by ferry boats, but when Lake Huron freezes, the sports teams must fly between the island and the mainland. If the weather is too harsh and the planes are not flying, the games are postponed or canceled. For transportation on the mainland, the students are met by a school bus which the Mackinac Island School district shares with the St. Ignace School district. Both the soccer and the volleyball teams will travel on one bus because their games are scheduled to follow one another on Friday night and Saturday morning.
Track and field as well as golf are also offered at Mackinac Island, but not in the NLL so our students compete against schools in the Eastern Upper Peninsula athletic league.
